How come hummingbirds are able to fly backwards?

This fascinating question is answered in stunning detail in a new video from Deutsche Welle — featuring ultra high-speed footage captured using an i-SPEED high-speed camera from iX Cameras.
With wings flapping up to 80 times per second, hummingbirds move far too fast for the human eye to follow. But thanks to the precision and power of i-SPEED technology, every subtle motion was revealed — showcasing the incredible control and aerodynamics behind this extraordinary flight behavior.

Special thanks to Matthias Bamberger, viZaar industrial imaging AG for coordinating with Deutsche Welle, and to Roy Dunn Photography for capturing these remarkable visuals using the i-SPEED 7 Series high-speed camera.

We’re proud that our cameras help unlock hidden worlds and support scientific storytelling at the highest level.
